Today’s Meditation 0 Click to read: Luke 15:20 What kind of father is yours? This story gets taken for granted often. When you think about it, this verse contains the crux of the whole issue of grace. The father had compassion on his son as he saw him returning home. We are not told what the thoughts were which flooded through the father’s mind at this precise moment. But can’t we imagine them? The same humanity that we partake of was in this man. He could have been tempted to be angry at his son — he could see his condition from afar. This one had strayed so far from the intent that the father had for him. He could have remained calm and stoic, waiting where he was in silence as the … Read entire article »

Today’s Meditation 0 Click to read: Romans 5:20 Thank God for superabounding grace! Perhaps you like a good story with a suspense filled plot. It looks as if the hero will never make it in time to save the earth, the city or the damsel in distress. The enemy gloats with laughter. But suddenly, the tables turn and victory is won for the right. Well, it’s not hokey in the least, but many times in our lives it does look as if we will go under, just as the disciples feared they would on the Sea of Galilee in the midst of the storm. But Jesus always comes through. Maybe you are surrounded by a virtual army of villains. It may seem that sin and evil have you surrounded. Worse yet, maybe it seems … Read entire article »

Today’s Meditation 0 Click to read: Psalm 52:5-7 Keep an eye out for the rich man this year. I’m not talking about any rich man, but specifically the rich man who loves evil more than good and chooses lying rather than to speak righteousness. God is going to pluck him out of his dwelling place. I think about the weeds I see growing in my garden. As I walk through the garden looking for fruit, I will see a weed growing up in the rows or among the plants. I reach down and grab the weed near the base and pull it out as firmly and surely as I can. I try to get all of the root I can. And then I toss it into the dirt to be scorched by the … Read entire article »

Today’s Meditation 0 Click to read: Colossians 1:18 It’s all about Jesus. God has given His Son a place of honor and glory because of His life and sacrifice. Jesus alone sits at the right hand of the Father. No angel, no man or woman, no hero, no being or creation of any kind has this place of honor. Jesus alone is the One who holds this place of honor, because He is the only one who is worthy. How do we know that we are living in God? How do we comprehend that our lives are pleasing to the Father? Primarily we know that God is pleased when we give Jesus first place. To give Him first place in our hearts, our homes, our finances, our mind, our entertainment and more, this is … Read entire article »

Today’s Meditation 0 Click to read: Mark 13:13 Endurance. One thinks of sweat, tight muscles, gritted teeth and a few grunts. We picture athletes riding bicycles, running a marathon or climbing up a rocky cliff. There is also patient endurance, the ability to out think or outlast an opponent, holding on by simply continuing to survive. Whatever picture comes to mind, one ingredient is the same: the willpower to not quit. We remember the scripture in Revelation which says that they overcame him (the devil) by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. Sometimes we forget that it also says that “they loved not their lives to the death.” The grit and determination we have described earlier is mostly demonstrated in relation to very temporal events: a race, a contest. … Read entire article »

Today’s Meditation 0 Click to read: Mark 13:13 Do you like to be hated? I don’t. I don’t know very many people who would really relish rejection and the scorn of others. Jesus said that those who follow Him “will be continually hated” all over the world. Throughout history there have been many nations and ethnic groups which have been hated because of culture or skin color. But those who belong to Christ will be hated no matter what their nationality. I think believers experience bad days and often blame it on the weather or the economy while forgetting that there is a worldwide hatred for that which is righteous. Not only other human beings are involved with this, but spiritual powers that rule over cities, neighborhoods and, I suppose, even corporations. If you … Read entire article »

Today’s Meditation 0 Click to read: John 11:44 Why are babies born with gunk on them? I mean, they could be born completely clean with everything ready to go except for the hairbow color of choice. But they aren’t. God seems to have a design in us receiving things that still need some work done on them. Did you ever notice that? He gives His people the land of Canaan, but they have to fight a few nations to subdue it. He gives Adam and Eve a garden, but they have to tend it. Jesus could have said, “Lazarus, come forth” and willed him to come forth in a white robe and new shoes. But He didn’t. He had Lazarus to come forth exactly as he went in: bound hand and foot with grave … Read entire article »

Today’s Meditation 0 Click to read: John 11:41-43 Pray out loud! We sometimes get caught up in the teachings of Jesus as if He came to add to the law and make things worse for us. When Jesus said to enter into your closet when you pray, He wasn’t forbidding public prayer, and He was not telling us that we could never pray out loud. Look at His example here: Jesus says plainly where those around Him could hear that He thanked God for hearing His requests. He referred to God as His Father. And then He went so far as to clearly point out that He was praying out loud so that those listening would believe on Him. What a testimony! I think sometimes we pray in silence because we don’t want to … Read entire article »

Today’s Meditation 0 Click to read: John 11:40 Jesus speaks to Martha in this instance referring to a conversation just prior to being at the tomb. He says, “Didn’t I tell you that IF YOU BELIEVE you would see the glory of God?” But we find Martha unwilling to open the tomb. So did Martha really believe here? Do we see her actions in this instance as an example of faith? Or was Jesus acting out His power in the midst of doubt and unbelief in order to bring FAITH back to life? So much of the Christian life is God simply leading us along, trying to build up our confidence in Him so that we learn to truly trust in Him. He is very patient with us, knowing that most of us are … Read entire article »

Today’s Meditation 0 Click to read: John 11:39 Are you ever ashamed of the smell? In this passage, Jesus told them to roll away the stone to the tomb where Lazarus’ body lay. Martha was concerned about the smell. Perhaps she thought that Jesus wanted to see the body and pay His last respects. But Martha did not want to open up this part of her life, her deep sorrow to Jesus. She was content to let Jesus comfort her and live with the loss. Jesus had more in mind than that. In spite of all she had known of His power, she did not have a conception that Jesus could raise her brother from such a long time of death. If you do not believe in the depths of your heart that Jesus … Read entire article »
