Christian Funeral Service for a Woman of Faith
(names removed for privacy purposes) Is it right to believe? Is it right to have faith? These are questions that determine much of the outcome of our lives. The answer you give personally to that question will shape your future from this point on. Several years ago, God in His grace and mercy poured out of His Spirit upon this family in a way that you had never experienced before. When that happened, a demarcation point was fixed in history. There was a life you had known before God poured out His Spirit on you, and there was life after God had poured out His Spirit. In talking with different ones in your family and your church, what I heard most was about the joy that the Spirit brought into your lives. This was evident in ____’s life as much … Read entire article »

Fasting: Going Beyond Three Days
As a person who has not been able to go beyond the three day period, I would be very interested in reading what the rules and guidelines for fasting are. What is allowed in the body . . . such as water; otherwise a week is a death sentence. There are also physical restrictions concerning nourishment (of some form) and after, I believe 7 days, one becomes unable to respond in a manner that one is able to replenish and save his/her own life. I am also of the onderstanding that 40 days and 40 nights is a phrase of the time that should be interpreted as “for a very long time” and not be taken as a day count. Might you elaborate a bit on THAT? (signed Pete) Thanks for writing. I’m not writing as … Read entire article »

Bad Thanksgiving Habits and How They Started
The following is the video of a skit I wrote entitled “Bad Thanksgiving Habits and How They Started.” It was performed by the drama team at Westmore COG on Sunday, Nov 20, 2015. Most Americans will probably enjoy the subtle (or not so subtle) references contained in it. If you like it, please leave a comment and pass the link on to someone else to view, too. The sequel to this skit (from 2016) is titled Mary’s First Real Thanksgiving. If your drama group is interested in performing the skit, the script and director’s copy are available (donation suggested). Please use the contact form to request a copy. … Read entire article »

A Note to Harried, Frustrated, Overworked Moms
My wife and I have been parents for a long, long time. At least, it seems that way. One thing I’ve learned is that being a parent is a tiring job. Actually, it can be exhausting. I likes to observe people. As we celebrate Mother’s Day this month, I can look around at the mothers of all ages in my circle of friends and at church and reflect on their countenances. I see the mothers of … Read entire article »

Never Trust a Rainbow on the Amazon River
This article is a feeble attempt to put into words what happened on what I now call my last Sunday in Brazil, but at the time I was calling it my last Sunday. After morning church, I had spent part of the day wandering jungle paths with my camera and my trusty native guide, Logan. Then Phil took me and some other guests out on a beautiful excursion across half of the Amazon where I … Read entire article »
How to Take a Cold Shower: A Primer for Spoiled Americans
Before the trip passes by, I felt compelled to write what I hope will be an instructive guide for American tourists traveling to Brazil. First, you have to understand that Brazil is hot. Yes, I know, Arizona is hot. Florida is unbearable. And the record for hottest temperature on earth was in Death Valley, CA. Blah, blah, blah. Brazil is a different kind of hot. To illustrate this, I’ve included this photo of my deodorant stick. … Read entire article »
Brazil Day Twelve: My New Vocabulary Word
We’ve been plugging away on the phones for two weeks now. But this evening, I was in for a real treat. The leader of the local organization, Almir, told me through an interpreter that we were going to have a “churrasco” to help celebrate my time in Brazil. Here is a big hint if you ever travel to Brazil. If someone ever invites you to a churrasco, raise your hand and say, “Yes.” Somewhere around 7 … Read entire article »
The Ride of My Life: Or Why My Son is Now Taller Than I Am
Today I had what can only be called “The Ride of My Life.” It started out with us leaving Paraquequara to head into town to begin the work on the phone system. We took the boat to the MAF site and then walked through the hangar to Phil’s motorcycle. While not painted on the chassis itself, I was soon to learn that this bike’s name is “Instrumento de Adrenalina.” The bike itself looked innocent enough (see photo). … Read entire article »
Brazil Day One
We spent part of the morning recovering from traveling all day Saturday. In the afternoon, we had a lunch at a nearby restaurant in Manaus. The place was packed. It turns out that Sunday was a holiday in Brazil for “Day of the Woman.” After lunch we traveled to Puraquequara (“Home of the Electric Eel”) where our host family lives. PQ, as they call it, is where the boarding school is for a number of the … Read entire article »
