Click to read: John 11:40
Jesus speaks to Martha in this instance referring to a conversation just prior to being at the tomb. He says, “Didn’t I tell you that IF YOU BELIEVE you would see the glory of God?” But we find Martha unwilling to open the tomb. So did Martha really believe here? Do we see her actions in this instance as an example of faith? Or was Jesus acting out His power in the midst of doubt and unbelief in order to bring FAITH back to life?
So much of the Christian life is God simply leading us along, trying to build up our confidence in Him so that we learn to truly trust in Him. He is very patient with us, knowing that most of us are suspicious of gifts, wary of strangers and unwilling to open up to others lest we be hurt. He knows we have been marred by sin, and His work of restoration is one that He is committed to for the long term.
What about Martha here? I suppose that sometimes faith is simply being willing to have the stone rolled away from the tomb. You may have no idea what Jesus wants to do. You may have no concept of the miraculous power He brings to your life. But just be willing to have the stone rolled away (Martha didn’t even roll it away herself; someone else did). When you give God permission into the depths of your sorrow, you open the door to Him who is the resurrection and the life.
Be blessed.
