Meditation 29

Today’s Meditation Click to read: Ezekiel 47:1-6 Have you seen it?  Have you ever had a glimpse of just how vast are the power and resources of our God?  Ezekiel had never seen this vision until God revealed it to him, and he had been a prophet for some time. How big is your God?  His power and majesty are equaled by none.  His strength is not broken.  His arm is not too short to reach you, no … Read entire article »

Today’s Meditation Click to read: John 13:30-31 What is the glory of God all about?  You hear preachers use the term in phrases like, “God’s glory is here tonight!” or “We could feel the glory of God in that meeting last night.”  It would seem from scripture that God’s glory has less to do with our feelings than it does with Him being seen in His essential character and nature. In this passage, Judas has just received the … Read entire article »

Today’s Meditation Click to read: Numbers 22:27-33 Are you beating Balaam’s donkey?  Balaam was an angry man.  He saw a chance to make some money, and he didn’t resist it.  God had already told him clearly NOT to go with the men from the king of Moab, but Balaam flat out disobeyed and went because he wanted the reward the king promised him.  When God sent an angel to prevent Balaam from going, the donkey did her … Read entire article »

Today’s Meditation Click to read: 1 Corinthians 10:20-21 Spring cleaning is here.  We all know about Spring cleaning.  After being cooped up in a house all winter, you get tired of seeing the same old stuff over and over.  You wonder, “Why do I even own this fish-shaped lamp?  Why do I have three sets of junior-sized golf clubs?”  Spring comes, and out goes all the rubbish.  Not that it is truly junk.  We just realize how … Read entire article »

Today’s Meditation Click to read: 1 Corinthians 7:21 Better yourself if at all possible.  Paul’s point here can be missed so easily when he tells us to abide in the calling in which God has called us.  In a nutshell, Paul is saying that it doesn’t matter how high or low you are in the social scale; it doesn’t matter whether you are married or not; you can serve the Lord no matter what.  This is in … Read entire article »

Today’s Meditation Click to read: John 19:19 The leader who didn’t abdicate.  In our day you hear about leaders of countries who left in order to save their skin.  Haiti and other countries like it have been frequent examples of places where those in leadership have used their position to pillage and ruin the finances entrusted to them only to depart once the game was up. Jesus was a true leader.  He went ahead of the people.  He … Read entire article »

Why Do Parents Call Their Children Bad Names?

“Monday’s child is fair of face.  Tuesday’s child is full of grace. Wednesday’s child is …”  Do you remember the next part?  If you were born on Wednesday, perhaps you do.  “Wednesday’s child is full of woe.”  And so on goes the little poem that most people have heard at least once.  That rhyme carries little real weight in our culture, but it carries an even more important message.  Names and stereotypes really do matter. I know someone whom we’ll call Brett (not his real name) who was raised by an abusive father.  As he grew up, he consistently was told that he was stupid, worthless, a retard and other vile names.  Hurt and confused, Brett began trying to find relief from pain in drugs and alcohol as a young teenager. … Read entire article »

Some Christmas Thoughts on Mary, The Mother of Our Lord

Miryam bath Heli, in one sense of the word, was the most important person that ever lived. We know her as Mary, the mother of Jesus. She was the daughter of Heli (bath Heli). She was very young and already betrothed to be married; but she was chosen by God to be the mother of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Mary must have been shocked beyond imagination when the angel Gabriel appeared in her humble dwelling in Nazareth and began to speak to her. When he said, “Greetings, Highly Favored One, the Lord is with you: Blessed are you among women,” she was troubled and did not know what to think and apparently feared what might be coming, because the first thing Gabriel told her was not to fear. Then Gabriel … Read entire article »

Are You Smarter Than a Five Year Old?

I awoke this morning to find an envelope from my 5 year old labeled “To Dad” beside my head.  I was going to reach for my Bible first as is my habit, but felt that I should open his letter first.  I’m glad I did.  I spent a while just looking at the picture and marveling at the simplicity and truth in it.  I’m sharing it with you in the hopes that it will give you pause for thought.  It might be easier to print it if your screen is small. Click the following link to bring up the PDF image: A five year old looks at the cross Some Explanation of the Picture In the picture, on the right is a “bragger.”  He has a frown on his face. In the middle … Read entire article »

If Only You Knew: A Poem on Identity

This third poem was sent in with the request to publish it “Name Withheld.”  Even as a believer, people sometimes lose sight of who they are and what God says about them.  I’m posting it here as a reminder that even in the seeming comfort of the church there are still struggles.  People with real problems attend our churches and need to know HOW to find the answer in Jesus Christ. If Only You Knew Bitter, angry, alone, Scared of the unknown. Confused, messed up, hurt, Feeling less than a piece of dirt. ‘Why am I here?’ you cry, Awaiting for that longed reply. ‘where do I belong?’ you shout, feeling fear and nothing but doubt. Pushed, pulled, stretched, It’s all SO far fetched. which way do I turn? what is it I yearn? This and that, here … Read entire article »
