Raising Entrepreneurs
Recently I had the opportunity to take my three oldest children to a home business conference a few hours away. It was similar to other conferences I’ve been to. There were motivational speakers. There were speakers who’ve made millions using the market power of the Internet. There were people who have been working a home business for just a couple of years and who have begun to see success. And there were the speakers who … Read entire article »

Don’t Be Evil or Naive
Where do you host your personal e-mail? Your church e-mail? Your Christian mission e-mail? Whom do you e-mail privately, and where do THEY host their e-mail? After this week’s announcement by Google that they do not consider your e-mail on Gmail to be “private,” I got fed up with seeing Christians, Christian churches, Christian missionaries and mission agencies and anyone else doing kingdom work simply falling all over themselves to hand their data to Google. Whether … Read entire article »

Who’s the Winner? Who’s the Loser?
One night in May, my son’s baseball team was playing another team. We had friends over to watch the game. It was a pretty close game. The parents on both sides were cheering their respective teams. There were plenty of close plays and (being Little League) enough errors to wrench the gut of any coach. At the end of the game, however, the score was higher for my son’s team than for our opponents. “Hoorah! We won!” Our company for the evening came back to our home for a visit. In discussing the game, my friend told me that while getting into his car, he happened to see one of the boys from the other team with his father. The father from the other team was yelling and hollering at his … Read entire article »

Noon Echoes
The alarm clock blared for the second time. Nancy reached over and found the button while groggily lifting her head from the pillow. Morning was here again. Yawning, she shuffled across the cool hard floor and found her way to the restroom. Last night’s coffee had to go somewhere. Morning coffee would soon be coming to take its place. Two cups and a stiff bagel later, she was on her way to work. Cars appeared and … Read entire article »

Lessons from Easter Island: Why Wise Parents Rock
Easter Island is a remote island in the Pacific. Located almost 2200 miles to the west of Chile, it is one of the most isolated islands which is inhabited. Inhabited by very few peopled, nonetheless the island is famous worldwide for its huge-headed statues which line the coast. As a child I read about Easter Island, saw pictures of the statues and used to wonder who made them. Why were they on the coast? What did … Read entire article »

What’s in a Name?
“Monday’s child is fair of face. Tuesday’s child is full of grace. Wednesday’s child is …” Do you remember the next part? If you were born on Wednesday, perhaps you do. “Wednesday’s child is full of woe.” And so on goes the little poem that most people have heard at least once. That rhyme carries little real weight in our culture, but it carries an even more important message. Names and stereotypes really do matter. I … Read entire article »

Notes on Romans 3
Righteousness | Wrath Law / deeds & works Righteousness without the law 3:21 -> 1:17 picks up again on the GOOD NEWS. 3:23 Glory of God, utter perfection. We glory in human achievements which exceed our expectations. Example in sports “the great catch.” Key passage in Romans is 3:21-26, esp. 24-25. righteousness of God faith in Jesus Christ to all / on all justified -> made justified freely – grace (favor, goodwill, unmerited, undeserved) redemption (redeem, cash in) propitiation by blood righteousness – justice is finally served forbearance – it appeared that God was letting sin slide, but He was simply being patient and merciful He shows us, practices what He preaches, perfect. He punishes the wicked, rewards what is right. … Read entire article »

Toy Soldiers and Tin Men
When I was a boy, Christmas meant a whole lot more to me than perhaps to my friends. The reason is that I grew up poor. I jokingly tell people that every time my Dad got a raise at work, they increased the poverty level index also. So Christmas was that special time of the year when we received presents out of the blue. We didn’t get the really exorbitant gifts. And we did get clothes sometimes. But we still were delighted to receive the “abundance” of toys and games and treasures which I could use to pay off my mortgage if I had saved them to sell on Ebay nowadays. Christmas wasn’t much about giving. True, we did give occasionally. But on a very limited income, we kids didn’t have a … Read entire article »
